What to wear to your Cape Cod family photo session

I’ve been scrolling through some of my favorite photos recently to be better able to offer some advice of what you should wear for your Cape Cod Family photo session. As I looked back through my portfolio, I realized that I’ve been lucky enough to photograph some very stylish families! In the past, I’ve stuck to some basic advice, but I’m hoping to be able to expand a bit - and show you some great examples along the way!

Feel free to only take this as a guide - I always think that your photos are for you and your family, so you really should dress in whatever way you’re the most comfortable!

Summer Sessions don’t always have to be at the Beach!

Almost 85% of my clients are vacationers who have traveled to the Cape with their family. Of those 85%, I would bet at least 95% ask for suggestions about Beach locations, and I’m happy to help! There are a handful of sessions each year though, that take place at the family’s AirBnB and they’re always so much fun - and convenient for little ones. There isn’t any need to worry about traveling to get somewhere in time for Sunset, you don’t ever have to think about how crowded a site will be, and there are always plenty of snacks easily accessible if needed! I really like shooting at people’s rentals too if there are babies involved. Sunset is after 8pm for most of the Summer and if your little one isn’t used to staying up that late, it can be stressful. If your AirBnB has a pretty backyard with beautiful filtered light, we can definitely shoot there much earlier in the day!

A Beautiful Start to the Summer on Skaket Beach

Sessions without little kids always seem to move a bit faster in some ways - adults take direction a bit more easily, don’t run off, and are less likely to want to go jump in the water…but when you add dogs into the mix, it can be a little bit more challenging. :) Bean and Sky were very willing participants though and didn’t seem to mind sitting still for photos - especially when a helpful stranger walked by behind me!

An Extended Family Session on Onset Beach

When this family arrived the night before our session, they ran into a few hiccups at Logan but they seemed to handle it all in stride - just as they did when the small little no-see-um bugs flew around them in every photo! It’s definitely a blessing not to have any wind…no need to worry about long hair blowing or clothing flipping up…but we found out quickly that a big drawback was less of a breeze to keep them moving!

What to wear for your Cape Cod Family Photo Session

It probably goes without saying that one of the questions I get asked the most every year (aside from “what should I do with my hands?”) :)….is what should we wear? Families want to know the best colors, whether they should all just match, and what to consider when trying to find outfits for everyone. I understand how hard this task can be! I recently put together a What to Wear Guide to help with everything and I’m so happy to finally share it with you.

Mother’s Day Mini-Session on Sagamore Beach

When we moved just off-Cape, I wasn’t really sure I would love being on “the other side of the bridge”, but I would say it definitely has it’s perks! And…I’ve come to find out that one of the most amazing things about moving across from the beach is that now I feel like I can host mini-sessions just about any time I have an opening. This May, I decided to host a Mother’s Day mini-session special and the weather (and families) ended up being perfect!
