When my son was born two years ago, I had no choice but to figure this out - it wasn’t sustainable for me or my family! About 10 years ago, I started my photography business - Emerald Eye Photography. Like most people, I took photos for my family, friends, and then eventually friends of friends. When I finally started charging, I was “making” $200/session - in quotes because none of that was profit after paying for my camera and everything else that was needed! I certainly did not feel like a professional.
In my full time job, I had to attend grad school and pass my boards. For my photography career, I watched YouTube videos and took a few in-person classes. I knew what I was doing but was lacking the education to run a real business.
As I grew a bit more confident, I charged more here and there but could never understand how people were getting by with photography as their “real job”. I wasn’t making enough AND I was getting tired as I got busier and tried to keep up with my full-time career.
To make a shift, I figured I needed some education and I started taking courses - probably 5 or 6 within a few years…While I learned a bit from each one, nothing ever felt exactly right.
I tried all of the pricing strategies mentioned in each course. I created my fake “ideal client”. I did everything I could to feel like a professional…but it wasn’t working. I was gaining experience but feeling more and more like a fraud. Who was I to think that I could be charging a good amount of money for a photo session? (I had convinced myself that I didn’t know enough - aren’t our brains amazing!) I avoided joining Facebook groups because they were for “professional” photographers. I had the talent, but lacked the confidence.
The courses weren’t helping with what I needed - a clear direction to have all of the business basics in place so that when I charged a client $500 - $1000, I felt like they were getting a photographer that lived up to that!
I decided to go back to basics. I focused on the business side of things. I put contracts into place. I worked on my SEO and figured out what clients I loved working with the most. I automated ALOT of my process so that every client had the same experience…and I worked on believing in myself.
I noticed that some of the work of the photographers in the Professional groups, wasn’t anything better than what I was producing…and I realized that if I didn’t start thinking of myself as a professional, I couldn’t ask anyone else to do the same!
When my son was born two years ago, I knew I did not want to go back into a job in healthcare. I felt like I could figure it out now that I was feeling a bit more “official” - so I quit my job in a leap of faith, jumped in head first, and haven’t looked back since. I officially felt professional as I put systems into place to streamline my client experience - and believed that I could do it! I found a way to charge what I was worth AND stay within my comfort level. While this isn’t the same for everyone, it is essential that you figure it out for yourself.
Since then, I’ve consistently brought in $1000+ per session, without selling to Clients. I’ve let each Family express themselves exactly as they are, and I only have to spend two days on my computer each week for backend work! I know exactly how to serve my clients, what I need to do to feel confident, and how to make sure each client is treated equally well.

Enrollments are rolling as it’s a self-paced program. You can sign up anytime. Access will be granted initially on January 30th but the discounted price is only available until January 25th!

The Slack support for this course lasts for 2 months! Access to the actual course material will be lifetime. You will have more than enough time to complete it within a month or two if you set aside a few hours each week to work through the program. Students will have the option to continue on month-to-month in the Slack group after the 2 months have concluded.

I am! I suppose you could go back to school and get a degree in photography - or complete an online certification to become a profesional, but honestly, clients usually look at your work - not your certifications. If you feel like you’re on the brink of professionalism…or if you’re just starting on your journey, this course is for you!

Yes..and no. :) The course is the same for everyone will be at different spots along your photo journey. This program will be run as a rolling enrollment - so you will all be going through the course together, yet still working at our own individual pace throughout the 2 month time in the Slack group together!
